Ph.D. in Nursing

Congratulations to Alyssa Lackowski (pictured above), Ph.D. in Nursing student, for being selected as a Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation 2024 Annual Assembly Scholarship recipient.

Be among the next generation of researchers.

Oakland University’s School of Nursing will prepare you with the highest-level nursing degree with full faculty support and mentorship.  The Ph.D. in Nursing program is designed to prepare scholars to respond to the escalating health care needs of society, enhance nursing knowledge through research, and steward the nursing discipline.

Our online program uses technology to increase student connectedness and also includes an annual “Ph.D. Immersion Week.”  This three day hybrid event consists of networking opportunities, intensive coursework, distinguished speakers, student presentations, and concludes with a dinner reception.

Flexibility of this format provides convenient coursework options, student networking opportunities, and small cohorts while cultivating a community of scholars.

Three tracks are offered:  BSN to Ph.D./80 credits, MSN to Ph.D./60 credits, and DNP to Ph.D./48 credits. See Plan of Study for curriculum.

Applied research is foundational to advancing nursing knowledge and expanding theory within the profession of nursing. The Nursing Research Portfolio includes research summaries of individual faculty and links for further information. Potential Ph.D. candidates are encouraged to visit the Faculty Research Portfolio Ph.D. to identify faculty who share a similar topic/area of research.

Oakland University offers in-state tuition rates for out-of-state Ph.D. in Nursing students, Graduate Research Assistantships and the Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP).*

NURSE FACULTY LOAN PROGRAM

The NFLP is federally funded and can make the Ph.D. program more affordable for our students. The program is designed to increase the number of nursing students who pursue careers as full-time faculty teaching in schools of nursing.  Up to 85% of the total loan amount will be forgiven if the graduate works full-time for four consecutive years in a nurse faculty position (commit to a faculty/educator role within 12 months of degree completion).
